Remembering Dennis Hampton

Friday, August 26, 2005

On July 28, I was saddened to learn of the death of a cherished brother in Christ, Dennis Hampton, Director of Missions for Sandhills Association.

Dennis died of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident Thursday afternoon, July 28, just north of Norfolk, Nebraska.

Dennis started Bible studies and churches in small towns and wide spots in the road in rural Nebraska. He drove many miles (50- 60,000) each year ministering to those in need, working alongside ranchers and farmers, and living the "Good News" of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dennis ministered with his boots on. His compassion for those God had called him to was evidenced by lines he once wrote, "The facts are heartbreaking. There are many small towns and open country expanses in North America where children have no opportunity to discover a relationship with Christ and no place to attend Sunday School. There are places where adults can no longer hear the Gospel taught or preached." Christianity has lost a passionate voice for outreach in the small towns and rural areas of North America.

Dennis was more than an acquaintance; he was a friend and co-worker who could be counted on for an opinion about everything. His candor and concern often helped me clarify issues and situations being dealt with. He lived life joyfully, loving Jesus and leading and serving us all.

Dennis left behind Elaine, his sweetheart since grade school, four children and five grandchildren. He is missed.

Please pray for Elaine and the family, as they need great comfort.
