Literacy Missions: HOKSBA
Friday, July 22, 2005
Literacy Missions is a tool which provides English language instruction, listening-speaking-reading-writing, to speakers of other languages with the primary focus of introducing students to the life-saving message of Jesus Christ.
The 2004-2005 classes met September through June at South City Baptist Church on Thursday evenings. Two teachers worked with eleven students in two groups. Within each group, the individual students were at different levels. We need more trained teachers so the number of classes can be expanded, allowing the program to reach more people and give more individualized instruction. There have been inquiries from individuals who need classes at beginner, high beginner, and intermediate levels.
New teachers must attend a 16 hour workshop which provides the foundation for teaching English. Workshop topics include Literacy as missions, methods of teaching, phonics, assessment, and culture. Studying these topics gives the new teacher an overview of the language, how to teach it, and an idea of student expectations. Dates for the next workshop are August 19, 20, 26, and 27. Friday evening sessions are from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Saturday sessions will meet from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch break. The location has not yet been determined. Workshop attendees must purchase a Literacy Missions manual and are asked to teach once a week for the school year.
If you are interested in this literacy-based missions opportunity, call Joyce Drydale at 529-2028 evenings or weekends for more detailed information and to sign up for the next Literacy Missions workshop.
