What if No One Proclaimed the Gospel?
Evangelism: Mark Jackson
Thursday, June 16, 2005
In 1950 one person was baptized for every 19 Southern Baptist Church members. By 1978 this ratio had decreased to one baptism for every 36 members. In some circles this decline was attributed to the liberal influence on the Convention and conservative leaders touted that a resurgence of conservative views would lead to an increase in evangelism. In 2003, after twenty-five years of conservative resurgence, the baptism/church member ratio had deteriorated further to one baptism per 43 church members.
In 2004, according to ACP data, the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association reported 515 baptisms and 24,162 members, which gives us a ration of 1:47. Anecdotally, as an association, we spent $31,649 per baptism in 2004.
What if no one proclaimed the gospel? If these trends continue, we may soon find out. Compared to the mainline denominations already in decline, we have not done too poorly. But are we doing enough?
Do you believe God is satisfied with our accomplishments or do we need to experience a revival? With recent events like the River Festival outreach, I believe we have established a foundation on which to reverse this trend.

What if everyone proclaimed the gospel?
