The Bivocational Pastor
Church Planting: Mark Jackson
Tuesday, May 1, 2007
In a recent article in the Baptist Press, Mitch Martin lists seven benefits of being a bivocational pastor. The article is interesting and worth spending a few minutes reading it but I thought I might list the main point for your consideration:
- There is more money for ministry in the local church.
- There is more money for the bivocational pastor's family.
- The bivocational pastor has a better understanding of popular culture.
- Since the bivocational pastor works in the marketplace he has numerous opportunities to minister for Jesus Christ.
- Since the bivocational pastor gets most of his salary from outside the church, he is more likely to be courageous in his ministry.
- The bivocational pastor has greater freedom to follow God's call.
- The bivocational pastor is better able to delegate ministry.
Recognizing the unique position and challenges that bivocational pastors and staff face we are launching a bivocational network. Jim Playford, a member of Metropolitan Baptist, has answered the call of the Lord to lead us in this endeavor. He can be contacted at 316-721-8765.
Bivocational Network Meetings will be held May 8, 2007, 7 pm to 8pm at the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association at 3474 S. Meridian and June 26, 2007, 6/8 pm with Steve Nerger location TBD.
