More Than We Expected
Baptist Campus Ministries: Brad Simmons
Saturday, March 1, 2008
As has been our custom for the last few semesters, The Mission hosted a Welcome/Welcome Back dinner for students at Wichita State. Our crowd for these events has slowly increased each semester, and so before we began planning we made sure to secure a larger location. Olivet Baptist Church opened up their kitchen and gymnasium for us to use. We planned and cooked for 120 students. When the people began arriving, it was clear we had underestimated. By the end of the night, a little over 200 students showed up, and somehow we had enough food.
All of these students were served by upperclassmen from The Mission, and we did our best to meet each one and tell them about our ministry. We also showed a teaser for our upcoming Valentine's event called "The Checklist." This annual Valentine's outreach attracted over 400 people last year, and we hope to have even more this year.
Each of these gatherings, full of students from all over the world, have given us opportunities to share the love of Jesus with many who would never show up at one of our services. As we move further into the semester, fruit from the semester's labor is already being seen. One of the fifty students that we picked up from the airport in January has accepted Christ. This young man is from India, and will hopefully be the first of many Indians that come to Christ this semester.
Because of your cooperation with the Heart of Kansas, college students from around the world are being reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If you're interested in learning more about what we do, or in ministering to international students yourself, feel free to call the associational office, or email me at brads@hoksba.org.
