Changing Faces
Baptist Campus Ministries: Brad Simmons
Saturday, September 1, 2007
It has been interesting to watch the changes happening at The Mission over the last year. One year ago I was concerned that The Mission would suffer soon due to lack of leadership. The students who started The Mission had been unwilling to let go of their leadership and allow younger students to grow in their leadership abilities. My concern was in vain. As with anything God has his hand in, He has brought about his changes in his time.
In the last year the make-up of students at The Mission has changed from over 85% Asian students to about half Asian and half African. This change has happened quickly, and God has already given us fruit. Several students from nominally Catholic backgrounds have given their lives to Christ. This movement of God has not been lost on the Asian students.
Two of the Asian praise team leaders had a vision for a special African worship service that would be led by the African students in the style of their culture. As a result, on August 4th, around 100 people gathered at Wichita State for "Amazing Worship: Africa Praises the Lord." About ten African students (with the help of a Malaysian and a Kuwaiti) led in African praise songs and performed a drama that centered around African culture and its struggles with witchcraft.
By the time you read this, the semester will have already started. We will have welcomed dozens of students back to WSU, and have picked up many new students from the airport. Please pray for us as we follow where God leads at WSU. Pray that we will be sensitive to his Spirit, never limiting Him to the known, but always ready for the next step of faith.
